A bachelor’s degree in graphic design teaches the tools and techniques necessary to communicate ideas visually. Most programs begin by covering key principles like color theory and composition before moving into sub-disciplines such as printmaking, illustration and typography, and industry-specific software like Adobe applications. Your salary as a graphic designer varies depending on factors like position, employer, education and experience. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports that graphic designers earn a median salary of $57,990 annually. Creativity and the ability to convey ideas with images are must-have skills for graphic designers. But you need more than a strong artistic flair for a successful graphic design career.

For the BFA program, approximately two-thirds of the coursework focuses on “the creation and study of the visual arts,” with the remainder in general studies. Because of the greater emphasis on upper-level studio courses, the BFA allows majors the opportunity to build greater expertise in a given area of the field. An internship is a required component of the BFA program as well as an exit portfolio presentation for public display. All students will have the opportunity to participate in KCAI’s internship program, three- to five-week long faculty-led travel programs, and full semester programs that can take them to one of several participating art and design colleges in the U.S. or abroad. These programs have allowed students to gain valuable professional experience in real world settings.
